Duni Group enters a new collaboration with Notpla – launching innovative plastic-free packaging with seaweed coating for better sustainability performance

Founded in a common focus on sustainability and innovation, Duni Group and the British company Notpla enter into a new collaboration. As a first step of the collaboration, Duni Group is launching a new plastic-free food packaging with a unique algae coating, developed by Notpla, which offers both functionality and improved environmental performance. The collaboration marks Duni Group's focus on material development and ambition to become the leading player in sustainable packaging solutions within the HoReCa industry.

The new collaboration between Duni Group and Notpla represents an important step towards a more sustainable packaging industry, exemplified by the new Alga product range. The Alga series is designed based on an innovative technology made of cardboard and coated with a renewable seaweed coating, developed by the company Notpla. The product is therefore not only a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging, but also offers a barrier so that moisture and oils from food do not penetrate the packaging. This makes it useful for many different types of food. Notpla's seaweed coating has been officially recognized by, among others, the Dutch authorities as the first and only truly plastic-free coating according to the EU directive on single-use plastics.

- The Alga series is more than just packaging - it represents the Duni Group's quest to redefine the industry and reduce its environmental impact. We are proud to be at the forefront in this area and look forward to continuing to drive the change, where innovation will be an increasingly important component going forward, says Caroline Tobiasson who is Product Manager, Duni Food Packaging solutions.

- We’re thrilled to be partnering with Duni Group to see our seaweed-based, plastic-free solutions continue to improve the environmental impact of businesses all around the world. It’s by working with companies such as Duni Group - who share our vision of creating real change - that we are able to reduce plastic pollution at such scale. The collaboration announced today is another step in the validation that our product is not only a more sustainable solution, but that we have succeeded in providing the foodservice market with a product range that is highly functional, says Pierre Paslier, Co-Founder & Co-CEO, Notpla.

Sustainability throughout the process
The Alga series also aims to spare the ecosystem. Seagrass forests require less resources, contribute to neutralizing the PH balance in the sea and benefit coastal communities. In addition, the manufacturing process is carried out with a focus on minimized energy consumption and optimal use of raw materials, which further minimizes the environmental impact of the product range. With an emphasis on sustainability throughout the entire life cycle, the Alga range is also fully recyclable with existing paper/card waste streams.

Functionality - without plastic
The Alga series remains highly functional with its moisture/oil-resistant barrier coating and durable construction, making it suitable for both hot and cold food. Its versatility makes it relevant to a variety of dishes, from salads to fried foods. The product line includes four products: a mealbox, a box and two trays that suit different needs in food service.
