Duni’s Top Five Table Setting Trends for Christmas

Christmas is almost here, and many of us are already thinking about how to create the perfect ambiance around the table. A beautifully set table can elevate any meal and turn ordinary evenings into memorable moments. This year, we’re seeing international influences blending with Nordic traditions, resulting in a Christmas aesthetic that combines the best of past and present.

To gain insight into this year’s table setting trends, we spoke with Jennie Johnson, Head of Design at Duni. With over ten years of experience in interior design, Jennie has a unique eye for detail and creating a particular mood. Her passion for Scandinavian design, combined with a flair for global influences, makes her the perfect guide to help us create a magical Christmas table setting. Here are her top tips.

According to Jennie, the magic of Christmas often lies in the details—the scent of cinnamon, the glow of candlelight, and the feel of carefully chosen materials. She believes that a thoughtfully set table can bring out that extra warmth that makes gatherings around the table memorable. For this year's Christmas collection, Jennie and her design team have identified five major trends that set the tone for this season’s table settings. They offer a harmonious blend of tradition and modern influences, where each style captures the spirit of Christmas in a unique way. From timeless elegance to minimalist charm, here are the top trends:

1. Classic Christmas – Timeless Elegance

The classic Christmas makes a comeback with timeless elegance. Dark red and deep green hues combined with gold accents create a warm and inviting atmosphere. "This style celebrates tradition, with plaid tablecloths and napkins that remind us of childhood Christmas celebrations," Jennie says. To enhance the atmosphere, scents of cinnamon and pine can fill the room with the essence of Christmas. Handcrafted decorations and soft fabrics like velvet and linen add a touch of craftsmanship.

2. Merry Mingle – Playfulness and Festivity

Merry Mingle is all about celebrating the joy of life with bright colors and playful patterns. “It’s about creating a festive and lively atmosphere,” says Jennie. Think bright shades of pink, blue, and yellow that create an inviting feel. Use patterned tablecloths and colorful napkins to set the mood, and add sparkling details like metallic candle holders. Scented candles with fruity or spicy aromas can bring life and joy to the table setting.

3. Yesteryear – Nostalgic Charm

Yesteryear takes us back with nostalgia through vintage-inspired patterns and natural materials. “It’s a time to rediscover traditions and create memories,” Jennie explains. Deep berry tones and earthy hues with hand-painted details provide a personal touch. Combine retro patterns with rustic elements like wood and jute to create a cozy ambiance. Scents of freshly baked gingerbread and mulled wine contribute to a warm atmosphere reminiscent of home.

4. Winter Wonders – Luxury and Elegance

Winter Wonders introduces a sense of luxury and elegance with maximalist touches. “It’s about celebrating abundance and creating a festive atmosphere,” Jennie says. “Imagine gold and silver, velvet and leather together creating a glamorous setting.” Deep, rich colors like navy blue and emerald green are combined with shimmering details for a sophisticated feel. The scents of lavender and mint add a modern, luxurious dimension to the table setting.

5. Humble Holiday – A Return to Essentials

Humble Holiday emphasizes the importance of being together with loved ones. “This trend is about embracing simplicity and nature,” Jennie explains. Inspired by nature, it uses neutral colors and natural materials like wood and linen. Simple, handmade decorations and live plants create a warm and inviting environment. The scents of pine and cedarwood add an earthy and relaxed atmosphere, encouraging reflection and togetherness.

Table Setting Tips for a Cozy Christmas

Creating a cozy Christmas table setting is about weaving together tradition and modern aesthetics in a way that reflects our times. Here are Jennie’s best tips for achieving the perfect setting:

  • Colors and Patterns: Choose a color palette that reflects your style. Cool colors create a modern feel, while warm hues offer a homely atmosphere. Experiment with different patterns to add depth and interest.
  • Textures: Use different materials to bring the table setting to life. Combine linen, velvet, and metal for an elegant feel. A soft tablecloth or beautiful napkins can make a big difference.
  • Scent: Fragrance is essential to the ambiance. Use scented candles with natural aromas like cinnamon, lavender, or pine to create a festive feel. A homemade scent of mulled wine or gingerbread can transform the atmosphere.
  • Lighting: Soft lighting from LED lights or real candles creates a warm and inviting ambiance. Try varying light sources to achieve a more cozy feel.
  • Personal Touches: Include items like family photos or handmade decorations to give your table setting a unique touch. It creates a sense of history and community.
